Patent Engineer
Mr. Gavrilovich began attending The John Marshall Law School part time while working
full time as an engineer in the Wireless Data Group. During his second semester
of law school, he continued to work full time at Motorola and transitioned into
the Technical Asset Management (TAM) group of the Messaging Information and Media
Sector (MIMS) where he immediately assumed a liaison position between several
product development groups and the intellectual property department. He drafted
patent applications while receiving mentoring from experienced attorneys in the
Intellectual Property department. In addition to patent preparation and prosecution,
Mr. Gavrilovich provided a variety of valuable services to the product groups
and legal department. For example, at various milestones during a project, he
organized and led meetings that included strategic personnel to identify and develop
inventions that may have been overlooked during the fast paced process of product
development.
Patent Agent and In-House Patent Counsel
Shortly after transitioning to the TAM group, senior attorneys recognized Mr.
Gavrilovich’s talent for drafting patent applications and requested that
he join Motorola’s Intellectual Property Department. Mr. Gavrilovich continued
to expand on his legal and technical expertise by preparing and prosecuting numerous
patent applications directed to telephony over cable TV systems and providing
intellectual property portfolio management. In addition to maintaining an extensive
domestic patent docket, he also corresponded with foreign associates and counseled
mangers to aggressively prosecute hundreds of patent applications outside of the
United States. After obtaining a Juris Doctor degree from the John Marshall law
school in Chicago, Mr. Gavrilovich continued as an in-house patent attorney at
Motorola until entering private practice.
Patent Associate
Mr. Gavrilovich moved to San Diego to join the law firm of Brown, Martin, Haller
and McClain, an established intellectual property boutique firm and later continued
in private practice with Gray Cary Ware and Freidenrich, LLP, a large general
practice law firm. As an associate attorney, Mr. Gavrilovich provided a variety
of patent related legal services including patent preparation and prosecution,
patent validity and infringement opinions, and counseling related to patent portfolio
management. By working with corporate, transactional, and litigation attorneys
on various issues related to intellectual property, Mr. Gavrilovich further developed
his understanding of the interrelationships between a company’s business,
legal and technical considerations and how those interrelationships varied with
the business objectives of various types of clients having diverse business objectives.
